YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Everything you need to know about learning to drive with WS Driving School.
1. What areas do you cover?
WS Driving School is based in Ely, Cambridgeshire and offers automatic driving lessons across Ely, Littleport, Soham and Witchford, covering the CB6 and CB7 postcode areas. Lessons start and finish at your home address. I can also collect and drop back from your place of work or college, as long as it is a local address and agreed in advance.
2. Do you offer automatic driving lessons?
Yes — WS Driving School is an automatic-only driving school. Every lesson is delivered in an automatic car, which means no clutch, no gearchanges, and a calmer, more focused learning experience from day one.
3. Are you a DVSA approved driving instructor?
Yes. Wayne Smith is a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with over six years of teaching experience and more than 50 five-star Google reviews.
4. What car will I learn in?
All lessons are delivered in a brand new 2026 Ford Puma ST Line automatic. It's a modern, comfortable, and highly visible car — ideal for learner drivers.
5. How much do automatic driving lessons cost?
Pay as you go lessons are £49 per hour. Block bookings are available at £276 for six hours (£46/hr) and £440 for ten hours (£44/hr). All time slots are the same price — evenings, weekends and bank holidays included, with no hidden extras.
6. How long does it take to learn to drive in an automatic?
Automatic learners typically need around 30 to 40 hours of professional instruction before reaching test standard — generally fewer hours than manual learners, as there is no clutch or gear work to master. Every learner is different and the right number of hours depends on your starting point and how frequently you practise.
7. Do you offer intensive driving courses?
Yes. WS Driving School offers a range of intensive and semi-intensive automatic courses, from a 10-hour Test-Ready Polish at £470 through to a full 40-hour Beginner to Test course at £1,760. Courses are spread over several weeks rather than consecutive days to ensure skills are properly retained.
8. Do you cater for nervous drivers?
Absolutely — and it's something we take very seriously. Supporting nervous and anxious learners is at the heart of what we do at WS Driving School. Wayne holds a specialist qualification in teaching nervous and anxious learners and every lesson is built around your pace, your comfort, and your confidence. Visit our Driving with Confidence page to find out more.
9. Where do lessons start and finish?
Your lesson will always start and finish at your home address within our service area. I can also collect and drop back from your place of work or college if that's more convenient — as long as it's a local address and agreed in advance.
10. Which test centres do you use?
WS Driving School prepares pupils for their driving test at Cambridge (Brookmount Court), Kings Lynn, and Bury St Edmunds test centres.
11. What's included in the price of a lesson?
Every lesson includes one-to-one instruction from Wayne, use of the Ford Puma automatic, access to the Total Drive app for lesson scheduling and progress tracking, test booking support, access to The Honest Truth national road safety programme, and an invitation to the private WS Driving School Facebook community. After your fifth lesson you'll also receive free hard copies of the Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs.
12. Do you offer refresher lessons?
Yes. Refresher lessons are available for full licence holders returning to driving after a break, charged at £52 per hour on a pay as you go basis.

14. How do I book driving lessons?

15. Do you help with theory test preparation?
