THEORY
Before you can get behind the wheel for your driving test, there's an important first step — the theory test. It's something every learner driver needs to pass, and it's something we take seriously at WS Driving School.
WHAT IS THE THEORY TEST?
The UK theory test is made up of two parts. The first is a multiple choice section covering road rules, highway code, road signs and safe driving knowledge. The second is a hazard perception test where you watch video clips and identify developing hazards on the road. You need to pass both parts on the same day to receive your theory test certificate, which is valid for two years. Only once you hold a valid certificate can you book your practical driving test.
HOW WE HELP
Passing your theory test isn't just about memorising answers — it's about understanding the why behind the rules. That understanding makes you a safer, more confident driver and it shows in your practical lessons too.
At WS Driving School we support our pupils with theory preparation in a number of ways:
Free access to Theory Test Pro — All pupils receive complimentary access to Theory Test Pro, one of the most highly regarded theory revision platforms available. It includes the full question bank, hazard perception practice, mock tests and progress tracking so you always know where you stand.
Free Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs — After your fifth lesson you'll receive your own copies of the Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs — essential reading that underpins everything in the multiple choice section of the test.
Ongoing support — Theory comes up naturally throughout your lessons. We'll talk through road signs, rules and situations as they arise in real driving, which reinforces your revision in a way that no app alone can replicate.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCES
Alongside Theory Test Pro, these are the resources we recommend most to pupils preparing for their theory test:
DVSA Theory Test revision book
DVSA Hazard Perception DVD / online resource
All three are available on Amazon and between them cover the full range of what the test requires.
NEED EXTRA SUPPORT?
MEET CHRIS BENSTED
If you're finding the theory test particularly challenging — whether that's the wording of questions, hazard perception, or you've already had an unsuccessful attempt — I'd encourage you to look at Theory Test Explained, run by Chris Bensted.
Chris is widely regarded as the UK's leading theory test specialist. He works with learners on a one-to-one basis via Zoom, focusing on genuine understanding rather than just revision — and his approach is particularly well suited to those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism or English as a second language. He has consulted for the DVSA and is a recognised stakeholder for the theory test itself.
