Frequently Asked Questions
I'm based in Littleport and cover Ely, Soham, and the surrounding CB6/CB7 postcode areas. This includes villages like Stretham, Witchford, Sutton, Haddenham, Wilburton, Mepal, Coveney, Prickwillow, and Queen Adelaide. I focus on teaching in areas where pupils will actually be taking their test - I use Cambridge, King's Lynn, and Bury St Edmunds test centres, so you'll be familiar with local roads, roundabouts, and potential test routes. If you're unsure whether I cover your specific location, just get in touch and I'll let you know.
Yes - and from Easter 2026, teaching in automatic makes this even easier. If you learned to drive abroad and now live in the UK, you might find our roads, roundabouts, and driving culture quite different. I offer tailored lessons focusing on UK-specific rules, road systems you're unfamiliar with (like mini-roundabouts or complex junctions), and building confidence on the "wrong" side of the road. Whether you need a few refresher sessions to adapt or full preparation for a UK driving test, I'll assess where you are and create a plan that works. Automatic lessons remove the added complication of adjusting to a manual gearbox if you learned automatic abroad.
Absolutely. Refresher lessons are perfect if you passed your test years ago but haven't driven since, if you've lost confidence after an accident or incident, if you want to tackle skills you've been avoiding (motorways, night driving, parking), or if you simply want to brush up before buying a car. We'll discuss what you want to achieve, assess your current skills, and focus on the areas that matter to you. Refresher lessons are entirely flexible - you might need just 2-3 hours, or you might want ongoing support over several weeks. No judgment, no pressure - just practical help to get you driving confidently again.
From Easter 2026, automatic lessons are £49 per hour - one simple rate with no hidden fees or surprise charges. What makes WS Driving School different is what's included in that price:
✅ Total Drive app with progress tracking (others charge extra or don't offer it)
✅FREE Highway Code book AND Know Your Traffic Signs book(worth £8-10 if bought separately)
✅Theory test preparation materialsand practice resources
✅Full lesson hour- genuine 60 minutes of driving time, not 45 minutes padded to "an hour"
✅Modern, well-maintained vehicle(brand new Ford Puma automatic from Easter 2026)
✅Honest progress assessment- no pressure to book unnecessary lessons
✅Access to road safety programmesand learning resources
Many instructors charge £40-45 but then add fees for materials, apps, or test-day car hire. My £49/hour is all-inclusive - you know exactly what you're paying and what you're getting. Block booking discounts are available for packages of 10+ hours.
Both. You can pay lesson-by-lesson (£49/hour for automatic from Easter 2026) or book a block package with a discount and pay upfront. For example, a 10-hour block saves you money per hour compared to booking individually, and a 20-30 hour package saves even more. I'll never pressure you to buy a big package if you're not ready - many pupils start with 2-3 individual lessons to see how they progress, then decide on a package once they're confident about continuing. What I won't do is lock you into expensive contracts or make you pay for lessons you haven't had yet.
Everything you need to learn properly. The £49/hour rate includes:
During lessons:
✓ Full hour of driving (60 minutes, not 45)
✓ Pickup and drop-off from your home, work, or college
✓ Modern automatic car with dual controls (Ford Puma from Easter 2026)
✓ Fuel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance
✓ Professional instruction from a DVSA-approved ADI
Learning resources:
✓ Total Drive app with progress tracking and lesson summaries
✓ FREE Highway Code book (new pupils)
✓ FREE Know Your Traffic Signs book (new pupils)
✓ Theory test preparation materials and guidance
Additional support:
✓ Between-lesson support (WhatsApp/email for questions)
✓ Test booking guidance and advice
✓ Access to road safety programmes
✓ Private Facebook community for pupils
Many instructors charge "extras" for materials, progress tracking apps, or test-day car hire. With WS Driving School, it's one simple price covering everything. You're investing in quality instruction, not paying for add-ons.
No. The £49/hour rate (from Easter 2026 for automatic lessons) is transparent and all-inclusive. You'll never be surprised by charges for:
❌ Theory test materials (Highway Code and Traffic Signs books included free)
❌ Progress tracking apps (Total Drive included)
❌ Pickup/drop-off (included within my coverage area)
❌ Test-day car hire (included in test-time rate)
The only additional cost is your driving test fee (£62 for a car test, paid directly to DVSA when you book). I'm upfront about pricing because I believe you deserve to know exactly what you're paying for. No surprises, no hidden admin fees, no unexpected charges halfway through your course.
Fair question. The difference is what you're actually getting. At £49/hour with WS Driving School, you receive:
Quality over quantity:
6+ years experience, DVSA-approved ADI, 50+ five-star reviews
Brand new Ford Puma automatic (not an aging Corsa)
Client-centered coaching (not rushed, target-driven lessons)
Honest assessment (I won't book you for a test until you're genuinely ready)
Included resources:
Total Drive app (many instructors charge £5-10/month extra)
FREE Highway Code book (£4-5 value)
FREE Know Your Traffic Signs book (£4-5 value)
Theory materials (£10-20 value if bought separately)
Between-lesson support
True 60-minute lessons:
Full hour of driving, not 45 minutes called "an hour"
No cutting lessons short or padding time
Cheaper instructors often charge extra for materials, apps, or test car hire - or they're newly qualified building experience. You get what you pay for. My rate reflects professional, experienced instruction in a premium vehicle with everything included. It's better value than hidden-fee instructors who look cheaper upfront but cost more overall.
Yes - booking packages upfront saves you money per hour compared to pay-as-you-go. For example:
10-hour package: Small discount per hour
20-hour package:Larger discount per hour
30-hour package:Best per-hour rate
Exact pricing for packages is discussed when we talk about your learning plan - it depends on your starting point and goals. Block bookings are paid upfront and also give you priority scheduling (your regular slot is protected). However, I'll never push you into a big package if you're not ready. Many pupils start with 2-3 individual lessons, then decide on a package once they're confident about continuing.
I don't offer free lessons (my time and expertise have value), but your first lesson serves as a perfect assessment. We'll discuss your experience, what you want to achieve, and I'll evaluate your current skills if you've driven before. You'll get a genuine sense of my teaching style, whether you feel comfortable with me, and whether the car suits you. There's no pressure to commit to a package after - if we're not the right fit, that's completely fine. The first lesson is charged at the standard £49/hour rate (or current manual rate until Easter 2026), and you can decide afterward whether to continue.
Test-day car hire is included in the test-time rate. Depending on which test centre you're using, I allow either 150 minutes (2.5 hours) for closer centres like Cambridge or 180 minutes (3 hours) for further centres like King's Lynn or Bury St Edmunds. This covers the car, insurance, my time supervising, travel to/from the test centre, and usually includes a pre-test warm-up to settle nerves and practice any last-minute skills. Many instructors charge £60-80 for test car hire as a separate premium fee. I charge my standard hourly rate for the time involved because it's the same car you've been learning in - no surprise markup just because it's test day. Fair and transparent.
Cash, bank transfer, or card payment - whichever works easiest for you. Individual lessons can be paid at the time or in advance. Block bookings are paid upfront. I'm flexible with payment methods but payments need to be made on time and we're clear about the arrangement from the start.
Yes - gift cards are available through the website. They're perfect for birthdays, Christmas, passing exams, or any milestone where you want to contribute toward someone's independence. You can purchase a specific number of hours (e.g., 5-hour gift card, 10-hour gift card) or a monetary amount. The recipient can then book lessons at a time that suits them. It's a thoughtful, practical gift that genuinely changes someone's life. https://www.ws-driving-school.co.uk/gift-card
I ask for at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Life happens - work shifts change, you're unwell, family emergencies arise - and I'm flexible when genuine circumstances come up. However, late cancellations (under 48 hours notice) may be charged because I can't usually fill that time slot at short notice. If I need to cancel for any reason - supervising another pupil's test, vehicle maintenance, illness - you won't be charged and we'll reschedule at your earliest convenience. Mutual respect and clear communication work both ways.
Every learner is different, but most automatic learners need between 17-30 hours of professional instruction plus private practice. Learning automatic typically requires 20-30% fewer hours than manual because you're not managing a clutch. How many lessons you need depends on:
Your starting point (complete beginner vs. some experience)
How quickly you pick up new skills
Whether you supplement with private practice
How often you have lessons (weekly vs. twice-weekly)
Your confidence and test-readiness
I'll give you honest feedback throughout so you know where you stand - no surprises or unnecessary lessons. My goal is getting you test-ready properly, not dragging it out to maximize fees.
Yes - motorway driving is an essential skill I strongly recommend before or after passing your test. Learners can't legally drive on motorways before passing, but once you've got your licence, I offer motorway lessons as part of refresher training or Pass Plus courses. We'll cover joining and leaving safely, lane discipline, speed management, dealing with HGVs, and staying calm in fast-moving traffic. Many newly qualified drivers avoid motorways for months or years out of fear - one or two motorway lessons will build confidence and keep you safe.
