Improving my own Advanced Driving Skills with IAM Roadsmart

Part of the CPD that I have planned in 2024 includes improving my own driving skills by following an Advanced Driver Course with The IAM; the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

In the context of being a driving instructor, CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. Just like in other professions, CPD for driving instructors involves ongoing learning and skill development to maintain and improve their teaching abilities and stay updated with changes in driving laws, regulations, and best practices.

CPD activities for driving instructors may include:

  1. Attending workshops, seminars, or conferences related to driving instruction.

  2. Taking advanced driving courses or instructor training programs to enhance teaching skills.

  3. Participating in webinars or online courses covering topics such as instructional techniques, coaching methods, and road safety.

  4. Completing modules or certifications offered by relevant professional organizations.

  5. Reading industry publications and staying informed about updates in driving laws and regulations.

  6. Observing other driving instructors or participating in peer review sessions to exchange knowledge and learn from each other's experiences.

Engaging in CPD helps driving instructors maintain high standards of teaching, keep their knowledge and skills current, and ultimately provide better instruction to their students. Additionally, many licensing or certification bodies for driving instructors require a certain amount of CPD hours to be completed within a specific time frame to maintain certification or accred

IAM RoadSmart is a UK-based charity organisation focused on improving road safety and promoting responsible driving. Formerly known as the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it rebranded to IAM RoadSmart to reflect its broader mission beyond just advanced driving. The organization offers various courses and training programs designed to enhance driving skills, including advanced driving courses for individuals seeking to improve their driving abilities and increase safety on the roads. IAM RoadSmart also conducts research, campaigns for road safety initiatives, and provides advice and guidance on topics such as eco-driving, motorcycle safety, and driving in adverse weather conditions.

Taking an IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) course, now known as IAM RoadSmart, offers several benefits:

  1. Improved Driving Skills: IAM courses focus on enhancing driving skills, including observation, anticipation, and awareness. Participants learn advanced techniques for handling different road conditions and situations, ultimately becoming safer and more competent drivers.

  2. Increased Confidence: As individuals gain a deeper understanding of road dynamics and develop advanced driving techniques, their confidence behind the wheel typically increases. This confidence can lead to safer driving practices and a more positive driving experience overall.

  3. Reduced Risk of Accidents: By learning defensive driving strategies and how to anticipate and react to potential hazards, IAM course graduates can significantly reduce their risk of being involved in accidents. This not only enhances their personal safety but also contributes to overall road safety.

  4. Potential Insurance Benefits: Some insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who have completed advanced driving courses like those offered by IAM RoadSmart. By demonstrating a commitment to improving their driving skills, participants may qualify for reduced insurance premiums.

  5. Enhanced Eco-Driving Techniques: IAM courses often include guidance on eco-driving techniques, such as smooth acceleration and braking, which can help drivers reduce fuel consumption and minimize their environmental impact.

  6. Professional Recognition: Completing an IAM course demonstrates a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development as a driver. This can be particularly valuable for individuals whose professions involve driving, such as commercial drivers or those in the transportation industry.

A particular interest for me will be Enhanced eco-driving which refers to a set of driving techniques aimed at reducing fuel consumption, minimizing emissions, and promoting environmentally friendly driving habits. These techniques focus on driving in a more fuel-efficient manner, which not only saves money on fuel costs but also reduces carbon emissions and helps to lessen the environmental impact of driving. Here are some common strategies for enhanced eco-driving:

  1. Smooth Acceleration and Deceleration: Avoiding sudden acceleration and harsh braking can improve fuel efficiency. Gradually accelerating and coasting to a stop whenever possible can help conserve fuel.

  2. Maintain a Consistent Speed: Driving at a consistent speed, particularly on highways, can improve fuel efficiency. Using cruise control on flat terrain can help maintain a steady pace.

  3. Anticipate Traffic Flow: Anticipating traffic conditions ahead can help drivers avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. Looking ahead and planning maneuvers in advance can contribute to smoother driving and improved fuel economy.

  4. Reduce Idling: Minimizing idling time by turning off the engine when parked or waiting can help save fuel and reduce emissions.

  5. Use Air Conditioning Wisely: Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption, especially at higher speeds. Using the air conditioning sparingly or opting for natural ventilation when possible can help save fuel.

  6. Proper Tire Maintenance: Ensuring tires are properly inflated and aligned can improve fuel efficiency. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, which can decrease fuel economy.

  7. Limit Excessive Weight: Carrying unnecessary cargo or excess weight in the vehicle can decrease fuel efficiency. Removing unnecessary items from the vehicle can help improve fuel economy.

  8. Plan Efficient Routes: Planning routes in advance to minimise distance and avoid congested areas can help save fuel and reduce emissions.

By incorporating these eco-driving techniques into their driving habits, individuals can contribute to reducing their environmental footprint while also saving money on fuel costs. Additionally, some driving courses, including those offered by organizations like IAM RoadSmart, may include guidance on eco-driving techniques as part of their curriculum.

WS Driving School is a Certified Carbon Neutral Business and I would encourage other Driving Schools to look at what they can do themselves. Being carbon neutral refers to achieving a balance between the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions released into the atmosphere and the amount of CO2 removed or offset from the atmosphere. It involves reducing carbon emissions as much as possible and then compensating for any remaining emissions by supporting projects that reduce emissions elsewhere or remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Here's how individuals or organisations can work towards becoming carbon neutral:

  1. Reduce Emissions: The first step is to minimize carbon emissions as much as possible by implementing energy-efficient practices, using renewable energy sources, reducing waste, and optimizing transportation methods.

  2. Offset Emissions: After reducing emissions as much as possible, any remaining carbon footprint can be offset by investing in carbon offset projects. These projects can include tree planting initiatives, renewable energy projects, methane capture from landfills or agricultural operations, or investing in technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

  3. Measurement and Reporting: It's essential to accurately measure and report emissions to understand the carbon footprint and identify areas for improvement. This involves tracking energy consumption, transportation emissions, and other sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

  4. Support Renewable Energy: Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power can significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with electricity consumption.

  5. Energy Efficiency: Implementing energy-efficient practices and technologies in buildings, transportation, and industrial processes can help reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

  6. Promote Sustainable Practices: Encouraging sustainable practices among employees, customers, and stakeholders can help reduce overall carbon emissions and promote environmental awareness.

Becoming carbon neutral is an important step towards addressing climate change and reducing the impact of human activities on the environment. While achieving complete carbon neutrality may be challenging, striving towards this goal can lead to significant environmental benefits and contribute to a more sustainable future.
